Microsoft Corp. said on Wednesday that the upcoming Windows Vista will allow computer manufacturers to set the default search engine to Google or any other of Microsoft's competitors.
Brad Smith, Microsoft senior vice president and general counsel, said the software giant is adopting a voluntary set of principles to guide development of its market-dominating operating system in a manner that promotes competition.
Smith acknowledged that eight of the 12 principles come from the company's 2002 antitrust settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice.
In a speech to the New America Foundation, a Washington public policy institute, Smith said:
