Coming Zune

Over the past week, the big news from Microsoft has been Zune - their upcoming suite of music products, most namely an MP3 player, media player with file transfer and music store.

Zune is an umbrella brand for what Microsoft's GM of Marketing for MSN Entertainment Business, Chris Stephenson, told billboard.biz is "a family of hardware and software products" targeting various digital entertainment services." Billboard confirms that "additional Zune-branded devices will follow, including a portable video player and, potentially, a portable game device," as well as an initial device offering WiFi and drive-based storage

Official details so far have been sketchy, and the Zune website doesn't exactly give much away. What we do know is that the first Zune player will be launched later this year, with more to come in 2007. At first, only music will be available via Zune with other content to follow later. The player will be drive-based and have wi-fi. {more}

The first implementation of this will be the portable music player and digital music service, in what is the company's strongest effort yet to rein in Apple Computer's iTunes/iPod juggernaut, currently responsible for about 70% of the digital music market and 75% of the portable digital music player market.

Additional Zune-branded devices will follow, including a portable video player and, potentially, a portable game device, although Stephenson would not comment on the videogame element of the initiative.

This end-to-end Zune service will cater for everything from buying your music/movies/games to playing them and sharing them. It will be incompatible with almost all other software (Napster, itunes etc), which maybe goes against Microsoft's recent ethos of not being evil.

Below is an advert, found on YouTube, supposedly by Microsoft, possibly relating to Zune. One comment says "It's people watching an Origami, which shows a picture of an Zune running Vista..."
