Vista RC1 on its way

Last week, Microsoft made a branch for the Windows Vista RC1 Milestone build. The branch is known as 'vista_rc1' and began with build 5504.16385.vista_rc1.

We can probably expect RC1 (Release Candidate 1) to milestone later on this month with one interim build (from the vista_rc1 branch) should be released to the Windows Vista Technical Beta Program before then.

5504 caries a new revision numbering scheme. However, this scheme was causing problems in 5504 (eg The Windows Sidebar wouldn't work) and was temporarily removed with build 5505.0.vista_rc1.060731-2200, but you can still expect this new revision number system to be in the next interim build.

There has been a lot of criticism over Microsoft's apparent priority of getting the software bundled and out over making it top-quality software with no bugs. It seems that the software giant has ditched many extra features due to time contstraints. I'm all for getting my software free of clutter, but I'd rather wait for it to be finished than rush to get it in a marginally usable state...{more}

I agree with Paul Thurrot's prediction that XP will still be on the shelves, and still be coming with new PCs, for quite a while yet. You can customize the amount of RAM you get, and you'll be able to customize whether you get the secure-but-unstable Vista over the stable-but-insecure XP.

It's a bit strange because Office 2007 is an amazing piece of software, and I'm using beta 2 every single day. I'm just about to spend a few weeks making a management training presentation, and I'm using Powerpoint 2007. The simple reason is that its great, and it works. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Vista which is slow, buggy and overly frustrating.

I've had Vista beta 2 for a few weeks, and Chris has just got his copy. I installed it, used it for a couple of days, gave up, formatted and reinstalled XP. Vista is quite simply not something you'd want on your work or home PC. Now if you happen to have a top-of-the-range PC, and all you wanted to use was Notepad and Paint (at a stretch) then by all means splash out 0 and by Vista. However if you want to use Office, it bugs out on Vista. If you want to play games, Vista has already eaten all your RAM. Of course it won't be long before we're forced to by Vista to play games and use software, just as we're forced to upgrade to XP SP2 to install any of Microsoft's addons.

A personal plea to Microsoft: Don't give us crappy software, make us wait for something good.
